The Learning Company - HRMS Case Study
When The Learning Company, Home Division, an international digital publisher
specializing in educational, entertainment, and informational software, went
searching for human resources software for their enterprise, they had high
expectations for both quality and compatibility. Lacking a comprehensive HR
information system to accommodate its growing needs, the company turned to Humanic.
With several employee benefits programs to track, including distinct medical plans,
life insurance, healthcare reimbursement, 401k and 401k loans, the organization
faced a tedious task: keying and updating everything by hand. "We were using an
Excel spreadsheet to keep track of our 300 US employees," explains Tish Frostick,
The Learning Company's director of human resources. "I knew it was crucial to
find an effective organizational tool." With the high volume of data to organize and
report on, Frostick sought a solution that would meet all of her department's technical
and functional needs.
The Right Criteria
Seeking an HR package to encompass its growing requirements and to match its technical
concerns, The Learning Company began what would become a yearlong search. First,
they developed a requirements definition in order to narrow down the choices. "One of
the most important requirements was the ability to integrate our UK headquarters into
the HRMS system, so we needed a currency conversion module," Frostick said. Another key
need was an effective compensation module to systematize planning and bonus tracking.
The Learning Company also had important technical considerations: "We wanted to streamline
all of our processes for our HR personnel in the US and in the UK. Compatibility with
Oracle and WAN capability were huge factors for us," she stressed.
Eventually, the choices were narrowed down to three. The decisive factor then became
user-friendliness. As a busy department, The Learning Company's HR personnel didn't have
the time to spend figuring out a complicated user interface. They wanted something
user-friendly and intuitive. While experimenting with the choices - watching demos and
trying the software, they found that the other systems were not as easy to use.
"Humanic HRMS was easy to understand and it was strong in all of the areas where we
needed it," Frostick said. In terms of functionality, The Learning Company found that the
software not only met all of its criteria, but also came out on top for being "very logical."
Humanic's record of positive client relations was also a factor in The Learning Company's
decision. "We checked references and made sure the system was working for others."
As a software development company, Frostick added, "we have a high standard . . . Humanic
has met that." In the time since the company has been using the software, she added, the
reaction among employees in the department has been positive: "It saves a great deal of
time and it's easy to show others how to use it. It's been fantastic."
Implementing a Lasting Solution
A Humanic implementation team visited The Learning Company to install the system and to
integrate its records. "We didn't have to re-key once," she added. Most of the
existing benefits plans converted to the Humanic HRMS easily, and the records remained
intact and accurate.
Another advantage The Learning Company enjoyed with the system was with its reporting module.
According to Humanic, while the reports are customizable, The Learning Company and other
clients often find that the reports and other modules work for them right out of the box.
Frostick noted that she was even more confident in knowing that if she had questions,
Humanic's representatives were always quick to help. "We have a very positive relationship
with everyone at Humanic, " she said. "I didn't want to buy an HRMS system and then be
forgotten. They follow through on time."
Having successfully integrated an effective software package to manage The Learning Company's
human resources needs, Frostick says she looks forward to a continued relationship with
Humanic Design. "Their software's compatibility has been exceptional. The whole system fits
us perfectly," she concluded.
