The Verdict: White & Case LLP Chooses a Humanic HRMS for Long Term

At White & Case LLP, an international law firm with 2300 employees, effective human resources management requires the ability to organize and access large amounts of employee-related data. A sizable law firm, it had been relying exclusively on a paper-driven system, using spreadsheets and rosters to manage a high volume of information. The time-consuming task of manually organizing the information prompted the department managers to seek a software package that could organize the information in an understandable and efficient system. To meet this need, in 1991, the company began using the Humanic HRMS system for tracking compensation and benefits, and for reporting this information to line managers and employees.

After six years of using Humanic HRMS, and witnessing the emergence of many new software products on the market, the department decided to evaluate the Humanic system, its new features and future development plans with regard to the needs of White & Case. With the help of the firm's IS department and discussions with Humanic Design they began an evaluation of several new products to compare the current system's capabilities against other offerings. According to Rita Troiso, manager of HR Information Systems, the department was satisfied with the capabilities of Humanic HRMS, but wanted to ensure that they weren't missing out on any advances in the industry.

She explained that the firm researches everything extensively before making any IS decisions. In 1991, it had rigorously examined the market before deciding on the Humanic HRMS software, and took the same care again in 1997. Each time, Humanic came out on top. "We looked at many different systems but we found that there just wasn't anything out there that was better for us. Some of them were too big; others didn't have strong future development plans in place. Then there was the question of working with a new group of people. We've always had a good relationship with the Humanic staff, " Troiso stated.

Because they produce regularly scheduled reports, timeliness is a crucial factor in the department's operations. "With this system, we have all of the information readily available and up-to-date in a centralized database, which saves a great deal of time," said Alison Conti, the firm's HRIS coordinator.

Another benefit of the system, Troiso said, is the pairing of efficiency and user friendliness. Since she had joined the human resources department after the software was originally implemented, Humanic professionals revisited the company to teach her how to maximize the system's capabilities. Importantly, she had enough instruction to be able to teach others in the department how to use it. Conti added that she found the system very easy to understand, and did not need any technical background.

With a comprehensive HRMS solution streamlining the department's operations, Troiso said that the firm's software decision was a solid investment. "I would say that the return on investment was evident within the first few years." The department's recent analysis of the market brought back this verdict: "Humanic is perfect for White & Case. There was no reason for us to switch."
